So, me and hubby were cruising the channels last night and I stopped when I came across the video for Echo and the Bunnymen’s Killing Moon. Come to find out VHI Classics shows the old 120 Minutes from MTV on Sunday nights, 2 episodes back-to-back. I sat there and reveled in the music: The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Sinead O’Connor, (this was the 1989 episode as I pinned it down) and The Replacements, Pearl Jam, INXS (we first thought this must have been a 1986 episode, but then realized it must have been a 1992 episode) and I was in awe. This WAS VH1 Classic… and this was the music of my youth. I could distintinctly remember dancing to the Sinead/MC Lyte remix of Put Your Hands on Me at a club, I remember going to The Cure’s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me concert back to back with a Beastie Boys/Run DMC concert in July of 1986. All these memories of my high school and college days were coming back and they were CLASSICS!!! When did I get old? What songs bring back the strongest memories for you?
When did my music become “CLASSIC”???? Monday, Jul 9 2007
Boredom and Life in general and Music 9:33 pm
It’s creepy when you liked music that was “alternative” in your youth and suddenly it’s “classic”, i.e safe and cuddly. We seem to be of a similar vintage and tastes. I remember in the 80’s a local act, Midnight Oil, could never get played on commercial radio despite their legions of fans. Too “out there”. Now even the most conservate stations will play them readily. The music didn’t change but apparently 25 years makes a difference.
Mr. Angry: I LOVED Midnight Oil!! I wore my tape out and had to buy a new one… LOL TAPE!
Don’t I know it! For me it’s usually movie soundtracks – like Flashdance, or Top Gun. Yeah, I’m old too.
Kelly: Oh yeah, the Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful soundtracks were in my constant companion!
I like it when new groups take “old” ie 80’s and 90’s songs and remix them and my teenage neices don’t know that they are actually old songs!
Tears For Fears is a big one for me… I was going through troubled teens and normal teen angst. π Human League too, love them!
Oh, my goodness. Do *I* feel like the old woman in the group this morning! If music from the eighties is not classic, what does that make my music? Oh.. yeah.. now I remember. OLD!!!! π
My kids are always amazed when dh and I can totally sing along to a “new” song! Especially those on Radio Disney! π The *A TEENS* have had several ABBA remakes. Plus there is a new “Katrina and the Waves song. They don’t understand that it’s OLD music! π
My teenage daughter thinks it’s hilarious, that I know these songs that are being remixed. I’ll have to tell her they are considered ‘Classics’ not “OLD” songs. LOL!
Songs for me would be like A-HA’s “Take on Me”, and Duran Duran. Then my Favorite movie would have to be “The Wedding Singer”. Lots of great 80’s songs in there. π
I still listen to all that music I grew up on. It’s pretty sad really, but I don’t care. It’s good stuff.
Mary: I had the TFF ALBUM! Many a day I would sit and listen to it over and over and over…
Leisa and Karen: Our kids are clueless!
Judy: You’re not Old, you’re a CLASSIC π
Christine: I loved the Take on Me video! And, watching Duran Duran performing on Diana’s concert and then Planet Earth this weekend I was still in love but can’t get over how old John Taylor looks, I wanted to marry him!!
Jenny: Me too. And it’s funny that my almost 11 yr old can sing along to most of the songs, she obviously thinks they’re hip and new π I’ve got her fooled.
What gets me is Bon Jovi being called “classic.”
I’m not sure which song brings back the most memories but I do remember the very first song I’ve ever seen on MTV – Take on Me.
GB: yeah, when did “HOT” become classic?? LOL
Kailani: The first one I really remember is The Buggles one, but the AHA one stands out cause they were so cute π
My, I’m really old. Who? Who are these people? My, I’m really old. π
It’s ok Sandee, really it’s ok π
Isn’t it just the suck when you hear the music of your youth called “classic” or **gasp** “oldies”?
Yeah – I’ve been going through this for awhile now.
The music of my youth is now classic…that is a hard one to swallow. Ouch.
Another Tidbit…the baby on the Nirvana album cover turned 16 recently. That one hurt too…
I’ve been thinking about this one. “We’ve Got the Beat” by The Go-Gos really makes me reminisce about my early college days, club hopping and partying on the beach.
Whew, I’m safe, I still have younger taste in music than my kids. Liking everything from Ella to Eminem, I’m safe that not all my music has become classic. It does suck when that happens.
